Memorial Day.
When the average American thinks about it, what comes to mind? Barbeques? Fireworks? Hiking? New Balance, jorts, and mowing the lawn?
It’s the unofficial start of summer for most folks. A day to kick back, enjoy the day off, and put the grill to use, right? Hit the parade, skim the pool, enjoy the family, and have that perfect steak…and I truly do hope that you did at least one of those today.
The thing is: the average American is right…but they often forget the reason why.
In this crazy political experiment that is America, we often take for granted the fact that we have the freedom to celebrate, and the reason why.
I had the blessing of walking through Arlington a few years ago. My casual walk quickly turned into a deep, profound, emotional experience that showed me the true cost of the freedom that we sometimes take for granted here in the Home of the Brave. As I walked along the lines of graves, in the shadow of those who gave it all, I realized the true price of our freedom.
It is a right that’s paid for with the blood of our brothers and sisters. A debt that we can never hope to repay. A debt that is second only to the price that was paid on Calvary.
So as your day winds down, as the thrill of the incoming summer season begins to calm, think about what it costs to be able to grill, to mow, and to enjoy your time with family, because some of us never made it back.
And don’t feel bad for enjoying your day, those who died would absolutely want you to enjoy every second of it.
